Blocking someone on Discord removes their ability to contact you directly and stops them from seeing your activity in shared spaces. This action changes how messages, mentions, and invitations behave between your accounts.
Understanding what happens if you block someone on Discord helps you manage safety and control the flow of notifications in busy servers or direct interactions.
Immediate Effects of Blocking
Message and Mention Behavior
Once you block a user, their sent messages are no longer delivered to you, and they can no longer mention you in channels.
Invite and Call Restrictions
They are automatically removed from active voice channels and cannot invite you to new calls or group DMs.
| Action | Result for Blocker | Result for Blocked User | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sending Direct Messages | Messages are not delivered | Messages fail to send | Yes, unblock to restore |
| Mentioning in Channels | Mentions are hidden | Mentions fail silently | Yes, unblock to restore |
| Voice Channel Presence | User removed automatically | Kicked from channel | Yes, re-invite required |
| Server Notifications | No popups for their activity | Sees normal server activity | Yes, changes after unblock |
Privacy and Profile Visibility
Online Status and Profile Details
Blocking hides your online status, profile picture, and bio from the blocked user, which reduces their ability to track your activity.
Mutual Server Interactions
You can still see each other in mutual servers, but their messages appear normally while yours are filtered on your side.
Server and Group Behavior
Shared Server Presence
You remain in the same server, yet their messages are not filtered on their side, so only your view is affected.
Role and Permission Conflicts
Blocking does not strip roles or change permissions inside the server, so they can still send messages visible to others.
Unblocking and Relationship State
How to Unblock and Restore Access
Unblocking re-enables message delivery and mentions, but you must re-invite them to voice channels they were removed from.
No Automatic Server Alerts
Neither party receives a notification about being blocked or unblocked, keeping the change discreet.
FAQ
Will the blocked user know they were blocked on Discord?
No, Discord does not notify users when they are blocked, so they may only notice missing messages or failed invites.
Can I still see their messages in a server after blocking them?
Yes, you can still read their messages in shared servers, but you will not receive mentions or direct messages from them.
Do blocked users stay in voice channels with me?
No, they are automatically removed from voice channels you share, and they cannot rejoin unless re-invited.
Does blocking remove friends or server subscriptions?
Blocking does not remove you from servers or delete friendships; it only restricts direct contact and visibility of activity.
Managing Safety and Notifications
- Use blocking to stop unwanted direct messages and mentions
- Remember that blocking does not hide shared server messages from the other user
- Unblock only when you are ready to allow direct communication again
- Combine blocking with notification settings for full control over disruptions
- Re-invite blocked users to voice channels after unblocking if collaboration is needed
