The

element in HTML defines content that is indirectly related to the main content flow, such as pull quotes, sidebars, or related links. It signals that the enclosed material can be considered separate from, but still relevant to, the primary narrative of the page.

Using

correctly improves document outline clarity and accessibility, helping user agents and assistive technologies distinguish primary content from supporting material. This article explains what the element defines, when to apply it, and how it fits into modern page architecture.

Aspect	Definition	Typical Use Cases	Accessibility Notes
Semantic Role	Represents content tangentially related to the main flow	Sidebars, pull quotes, ads, related posts	Screen readers may announce it as complementary
Placement Guidance	Should be inside a sectioning root or near related content	Within an article, section, or page column	Does not contribute to main landmark unless managed
Content Scope	Supports the main content without being essential to it	Supplementary explanations or author bios	Keep related content grouped for clarity
Styling Independence	Block-level by default, style freely without semantics change	Distinct visual treatment expected	Avoid using solely for visual presentation without semantics

Definition and Relationship to Main Content

In HTML, what the

element defines is content set apart from the main narrative while remaining contextually linked. Unlike generic

containers,

communicates intent to user agents and developers that the enclosed material is supportive rather than central.

When placed inside an

, an

can represent a note, warning, or related group of links that enhances understanding without disrupting the primary reading sequence. This clear separation supports better document outlining and navigation.

Semantic and Accessibility Behavior

Assistive technologies often expose

through landmark roles, allowing users to skip or explore complementary content independently of the main text. This behavior depends on correct usage, not on visual styling alone.

ARIA practices rarely require direct roles on

because the element already carries an implicit complementary semantics. Overriding these roles without need can confuse assistive technology users instead of helping them.

Common Use Cases and Placement Patterns

Typical

scenarios include sidebars with related links, pull quotes that highlight key ideas, and contextual callouts that explain terminology. Each example should still be readable and meaningful even when moved or restyled.

Placing

beside the main content area visually reinforces its supportive role, but authors must ensure logical source order so that mobile and assistive technology users encounter related information in a sensible sequence.

FAQ

Does using
affect search rankings directly?

Search engines use semantic clues to understand page structure;

can reinforce topical relevance for side content, but it does not independently boost rankings.

Can
be nested inside another
?

Yes, nesting is valid when the inner aside remains tangentially related to the outer one, though deep nesting may complicate understanding for some assistive technology users.

What happens if I put primary article text inside
?

The content is still rendered visually, but screen reader users may expect it to be supplementary, which can cause confusion if the text is actually core to the article.

Is
supported in all browsers and email clients?

Modern browsers support the element consistently, but some legacy email clients and older rendering engines may treat it as an unknown inline element without default block styling.

Best Practices and Key Takeaways

Use
for truly tangential content such as sidebars, pull quotes, or related links.
Keep the main argument and essential information in the primary flow outside
.
Ensure that the reading order makes sense even if the
is repositioned or hidden.
Combine
with clear headings and links to improve navigation for assistive technology users.
