I was completely blown away by what a great job Jimmy and Chai did. Not that I had low expectations for them, not at all. Just that sports docs and climbing films are a tough order to pull off. But Alex is such a fascinating individual, and his relationship with Sanni provides a compelling narrative tension: Is he capable of love? Will his Spocklike mind find a place of comfort is the fuzziness of human relationships?
The climbing, of course, is extraordinary, and his recitation of the moves through the pitches provides a window to non-climbers how the sports is a puzzle climbers are ever trying to solve. Oh, and that pull-away shot near the end? That might finally give people a sense of just how damn big El Cap is.
